HIU not working? It's the box in your flat's cupboard.

Most new-build flats in London don't have their own boiler. Heat comes from the building's communal system, and a heat interface unit, or HIU, turns it into heating and hot water for your flat.

When the HIU fails you usually lose hot water first. The repair starts with finding which part has failed.

Plate heat exchanger

Where your hot water gets its heat. Scale and sludge build up between the plates, so taps run lukewarm or swing hot and cold.
